Steen / 2025 / 12’

In the 1960s Netherlands, a young, tormented sculptor slowly loses his grip on reality. He projects his imagination onto his stonework and becomes completely consumed by an all-encompassing illusion, which ultimately descends into utter madness.

Steen is my graduation film, which I worked on in 2025 during my time at the St. Joost Academy. I wrote, directed, and edited the film myself.

A major inspiration for the editing was Meshes of the Afternoon, an experimental short film that merges dream and reality through repeating images, unconventional camera angles, and a surreal atmosphere. In Steen I translate that approach into my own montage, so that the inner experience and emotional world of the protagonist become tangible.
